Because You Asked – My Diet

The food in my life has evolved significantly over the past four years.

It had to, my on-the-run (to nowhere in particular) lifestyle had me feeling seriously sick.

I’ve been very blessed to have had my hand held into the lifestyle I currently live by my husband and his mom (an exceptional certified holistic coach).  There is so much ground to cover when it comes to environmental medicine –  powerful knowledge yielding immediate, life changing advantages.

While my tired days with a toddler often warrant crazed caffeine and sweets cravings, for the most part my body now yearns for very different fixes.  Many people ask me how I eat, and are often surprised by my answer.  While I love fresh juices, smoothies, salads, and vegan creations – it’s all about hearty and complex comfort food for this girl.  Since I had my son I’ve found I’m actually not able to digest too many raw foods anyways (too many enzymes that result in killer stomachaches!).  Real food, prepared mindfully and simply, holds more power than any medicine.

So what do I eat?

Everything fresh, local, and organic.  Mostly gluten free.  Mostly dairy free (cheese is my vice).  Nothing from a can (ever).  Hardly ever any frozen/preserved meals (I am a sucker for a good vegan/gluten free pizza from time to time though).  Mostly homemade from scratch.  A lot of organic coconut, grape seed, and olive oil to cook with.  No white sugar.  Lots of filtered or spring water.  sprouted brown rice, quinoa (pasta too!), and French lentils.  Almond milk.  Popcorn.  Avocados.  Tomatoes.  Organic free run eggs, chicken, lamb, and steak (on special occasions).  Himalayan sea salt.  Watermelon.  Homemade stews.  Steamed and roasted vegetables.  Lots of turmeric, fresh garlic, and ginger.  Seasonal fruits and vegetables.

With my husband’s food intolerances, I generally don’t buy things he can’t eat (even if I can).  I don’t deny myself anything on the contrary.  I haven’t worked out since I was pregnant, still breastfeed, and have never felt more beautiful, sexy, or confident.  I take prenatal vitamins, high doses of c, fish oil, magnesium, and liquid d daily.  Every day I live for my small almond milk latte.  When I go to a restaurant I order whatever I like (but reconcile the damage with digestive enzymes and probiotics).

Taking the time to revolve my life around my family and food has given me the life I never thought I could have.

I’m so grateful.  Happy Thanksgiving American friends!
